Sumak Sumac Spice Ground Powder ~ Rhus Coriaria
Origin:Turkey.
The Sumac Spice Ground Powder is one of the most distinctive and recognizable spices of the Middle East and the Mediterranean. It comes from the fruits of the Rhus coriaria shrub, which are dried and crushed to yield this wonderful deep red powder with a characteristic lemony acidity.
Sumac stands out because it offers a fruity and refreshing acidity , but without the moisture of lemon or vinegar. Its flavor is mildly tart, earthy and adds an immediate "liveliness" to any dish.
Usage Suggestions
It's the secret ingredient that can transform even the simplest food:
Salads & Dips: Essential for the classic Fattoush salad , but also on top of hummus, tzatziki or yogurt.
Meat & Fish: Ideal for sprinkling on kebabs, gyros or grilled chicken. It also goes incredibly well with grilled fish.
Onions: Mix it with finely chopped onions and parsley to accompany grilled meats (it removes the "spiciness" of the onion and makes it sweeter).
Za'atar: It is a key ingredient in the well-known Za'atar spice blend.
Add the sumac at the end of cooking or directly when serving to fully enjoy its freshness and aroma!
