The Styrax benzoin tree of Sumatra is the main source of the aromatic resin that is officially called Gum Benjamin (or Gum Benzoin ) in international trade. The word "Benjamin" is a historical, linguistic corruption of the original Arabic name for the resin, "Luban Jawi" (i.e. "Java/Sumatra Frankincense" ), which over the years was transformed into European French as benjoin and into English as benjamin.

Natural Environment : It is a fast-growing tropical tree that thrives in the forests of Sumatra and Indonesia, reaching a height of 30 to 34 meters.

Tapping : When the tree reaches about 7 years of age, producers tap its bark. The tree secretes a milky sap to heal the wound, which hardens in the air after 4–6 months and turns into a crystalline resin.

The Name "Black Myrrh" : In the Greek market and Orthodox ecclesiastical tradition, the raw resin from Sumatra (Sumatra Benzoin) is often referred to as Black Myrrh due to its dark gray-brown color.
