Star Anise Dried Whole Spice ~ Illicium Verum

The Star anise ( Illicium verum ) is a star-shaped dried spice, famous for its intense licorice aroma and healing properties.

Characteristics & Taste

Appearance: The dried fruit of an evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia. Each “star” usually has 6–8 rays, each containing a shiny seed.

Flavor Profile: It has a sweet and spicy flavor that resembles common anise, although the two plants are not botanically related. 

Culinary Uses

Key Ingredient: It is a main ingredient in the Chinese "5 spice" mixture and the Vietnamese Pho soup.

Greek & International Cuisine: It is used whole in sauces , broths, marinades for red meat, but also in spoon sweets or festive pastries.

Drinks: It gives an excellent flavor to tea, coffee and alcoholic beverages such as liqueur and ouzo.

Use: Add 1-2 stars to your food or tea, but remove them before serving as they are hard.
