Oregon Grape root ( Mahonia aquifolium ), known in Greece as Mahonia, is a powerful herb. The "cut" form of the root is mainly used for the preparation of herbal teas and tinctures, as it contains the active substance berberine.

Due to berberine, it has antibacterial and antifungal properties, helping the immune system fight infections.

How to Use and Dosage
Because the root is very bitter, it is rarely consumed as a plain tea without sweeteners. 
Decoction (Tea): Simmer 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried root in 1 cup of water for 10-15 minutes. Strain and drink before meals.
Tincture: The usual dose is 1/2 to 1 teaspoon (or up to 5ml) dissolved in water, 3 times a day.
