The Mountain Tea or Malotira ( Sideritis syriaca ) is an endemic herb that thrives exclusively in the mountainous areas of Crete, mainly in the White Mountains andon Psiloritis. Its name comes from the Italian words male (illness) and tirare (to drag/drive away), indicating its traditional use as a therapeutic means for extracting illness from the body. 

Properties & Benefits

Malotira is known for its beneficial actions, many of which are supported by modern research:

Respiratory & Cold: Traditionally used to relieve sore throats, coughs and symptoms of the common cold.

Digestive System: Helps digestion, fights bloating and relieves stomach upset.

Antioxidant Action: It is rich in flavonoids and phenolic compounds that strengthen the immune system and protect cells from oxidative stress.

Other actions: Studies are investigating its effect on enhancing memory and protecting against neurological diseases.

Method of Preparation

To enjoy the properties of Malotira, follow the steps below:

Boil water and add about 1 tablespoon (or 2-3 sprigs) of dried Malotiras to a pot.

Let it simmer for about 5 minutes or let it steep for 5-7 minutes in hot water.

Strain and serve. It is often combined with honey or other herbs such as dittany to enhance its flavor and action.
