The Blackthorn Berries (also known as Sloe Berries or sloes) are the fruits of the Prunus spinosa shrub . They are famous for their strong, astringent flavor and deep blue-black color.

Product Features

Appearance: Small, spherical fruits that resemble berries, with a wrinkled surface due to drying.

Taste: Very acidic and astringent if eaten raw, but becomes sweet and aromatic when cooked or extracted in alcohol/sugar.

Uses in the Kitchen & Preparations

Sloe Gin: Their most classic use. The whole dried berries are steeped in gin and sugar for several weeks, creating an aromatic, red liqueur.

Jams & Jellies: Due to their high pectin content, they give excellent texture to homemade jams, usually combined with apples to balance their astringency.

Syrups: Used to create a base for cocktails or as a garnish for desserts.

Tea & Infusions: They can be added to herbal blends to give a slightly fruity aroma and dark color. 

Many people prefer to slightly "crack" the skin of dried fruits before use to release their juices more easily.
