Alkanet Dried Cut Root ~ Alkanna Tinctoria

Alkanna tinctoria (Alkanna or Hava Jiva) is one of the most historic herbs, known since antiquity mainly for the powerful red pigment contained in its root.

Uses

The root contains alkannin , a substance that gives a deep red, purple or crimson color.

Cosmetics: Used to give natural color to lip balms, lipsticks, soaps and blushes.

Fabrics & Wood: Ideal for dyeing wool, silk and for finishing furniture (gives a rich brown-red hue to wood).

Tip: The pigment is fat-soluble . To release its color, it must be soaked in oil or alcohol, not just water. 

External use

Due to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, the root is used in traditional recipes for:

Wound healing: Helps regenerate the skin in cases of ulcers, bedsores or burns.

Skin problems: Used in oils or ointments for eczema and psoriasis.

Although it was formerly used as a tea, modern herbalism discourages ingestion .

If you want to make a healing oil or cream base, put the root in a jar with olive or almond oil and leave it in a shady place for 2-4 weeks (shaking daily) until the oil turns deep red.
