The Labdanum is one of the most valuable and historic resins in the world. It comes from the plant Cistus Creticus, which grows in abundance in the mountains of Crete, especially in the area of Sissi and Zoniani.

History and Collection

Labdanum has been mentioned since antiquity (by Herodotus and Dioscorides) as an ingredient for sacred incense and the creation of Holy Myrrh. Its collection is a unique, traditional process:

The "Oil Comb": Collectors use a wooden tool with leather straps, with which they "comb" the plants under the strong summer sun, so that the sticky resin adheres to the skin.

Uses

Perfumery: It is the herbal alternative to animal amber (ambergris). It has a deep, balsamic, earthy and slightly sweet aroma that is used as a "stabilizer" in expensive perfumes.

Incense: Pure resin burns on charcoal, offering a very relaxing and purifying smoke, ideal for meditation.

Cretan labdanum is considered of superior quality due to the island's particular climatic conditions that favor the production of the resin.
